Lankan weightlifters not given due recognition, says Gold Medallist Pradeep

S.K.S.Pradeep of Sri Lanka Army who won a Gold Medal at the Asian Pacific Classic Power Lifting contest held at Gold coast,Australia from March 12 to 19 ,2019 was sad that the Weightlifters of Sri Lanka are not properly recognized and given the necessary support by the relevant authorities to improve the game. This observation was made by S.K.S.Pradeep when the writer met him at the YMCA Weightlifting Centre,Kandy.

In the year 2018 he won a Silver Medal at the Asian Classic Power Lifting Contest held in Ulanbatar, Mongolia. He lifted 197.5 Kgs. In squat and 225 Kgs. In dead-lift, 122.5 Kgs.in Bench Press and a total of 545 Kgs.

In the 59 Kg. Weight class. In the year 2019 when he won the Gold Medal he lifted 205 Kgs.in Squat with a new Sri Lanka Record. Bench press 125 Kgs. was also a new Sri Lankan Record. In dead lift he lifted 225 Kgs. a total of 555 Kgs. also a new Sri Lanka Record. According to the world rankings he is in the seventh place in the world under the 59 Kgs. Weight class.

An old boy of Gemunupura Kanishta Vidyalaya, Tissamaharama he started weight lifting In the year 2010 when he joined the Sri lanka Army and he was not qualified to compete at the Nationals till the year 2013 as he came second in his weight Class and only the winner was allowed to participate. But from 2013 onwards he participated at the National Power Lifting contest and won. He joined the Army to do Karate but changed his mind and started on Power lifting.

Pradeep’s family is at Tissamaharama and they are farmers and he was residing there till he was enrolled into the Sri Lanka Army. His Coach is Athula Wijewickrema, International weightlifter and Coach.
