SLC set to name foreign coach for SL U-19 team

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is searching for possibilities to assign a foreign coach for the Under-19 team in an attempt to enhance the performances of the junior players.

This would be the first time in junior cricket history that the appointment of a foreign coach for the Under-19 team has been considered.

Former Sri Lanka Captain Hashan Tillakaratne is currently in charge of the Under-19 team, but his services would be terminated once the new coach takes over.

The recent mediocre performances of the junior cricketers both at home and overseas have been the main reason for SLC to search for a highly-qualified foreign coach who is set to guide the players during the course of the next couple of years. Sri Lanka had to be content with the 10th position out of 16 teams during the ICC Youth Cricket World Cup which was held early this year in South Africa. They were ninth place in the 2018 Tournament in New Zealand.

“Already we have shortlisted few names for this job and we would take a final decision during the next couple of weeks”, a high -ranking official of SLC said yesterday.

“We are currently studying the track record and the overall past results of these foreign coaches before selecting the most qualified person for this role,” added the source.

Second-phase training

Meanwhile, the SLC coaching staff, headed by Micky Arthur, are planning to conduct the second-phase of outdoor training for the national cricketers from June 22 at the Pallekele Stadium in Kandy. The first-phase of outdoor training which revolved around a squad of 13 national players concluded last week at the CCC Grounds in Maitland Crescent.

"We are hoping to conduct another residential training programme for the national players in Kandy, but this time with a bigger group," a source from the SLC said.

"Most of the players who participated in the first phase of outdoor training are likely to be there in the second phase as well and more players will be added to the list. So, it will be more like a combination of bowlers and batsmen," the source added further.
