SLAS eying green-light from Sports Ministry

Sri Lanka Automobile Sports (SLAS) has announced its 2020 annual calendar with eight Supercross, five Circuite Meest, three Hill Climbs and three Motor Rallies at the beginning of the year. It also included Hutch Super Series and CEAT-SLADA Championship. But the unexpected Corona pandemic resulted in abandoned SLAS activities.

The southern Eliyakanda Hill Climb was the only possible event which was conducted last February. SLAS president Rizvi Farook said that they have to cancel two annual events and National Championship due to Covid-19 pandemic. “Sports Ministry has not provided us with the rules and regulations and event calendar to conduct the events and it is an uncertainty whether we will be able to conduct the events in the next six months,” he further said.

The license issued by the SLAS to compete in their 2020 events will be applied for 2021 and the drivers and and riders will not be subjected for a new license fee for 2021. The 2020 competition fees of the annual events too will be applicable for 2021.

According to Farook, SLAS hopes to conduct one Hill Climb, a Gravel race and a Tarmac race in the next six months if the Sports Ministry gives approval under health regulations with the aim to keep motor racing competitors in good shape. Farook also said that they will have the support of all motor sport associations in organizing those three events.
