Bevishan, a promising weightlifter

Bevishan Wijewickrema

Bevishan Wijewickrema, a champion weightlifter of Kandy District, at present one of the best weightlifters in the island is the son of another Champion weightlifter, Athula Wijewickrema and grandson of famous weightlifter S.A.Wijewickrema (Junior) and the late S.A.Wijewickrema (Senior) who is also a well known weightlifter. Bevishan is an Old Boy of Trinity College,Kandy and he represented his School in weightlifting as well as rugby. At present he is following a four-year Management course at the ICBT Campus.

Following are some of his outstanding Achievements:

Won a silver medal at the Youth Commonwealth Games held in Samoa in 2015 in 85 Kg. weight class. Won a Bronze Medal in the Commonwealth Championship (Youth Division) in 2013 in the 69 Kg. weight category and In 2016, 85 Kg. weight category in the same Championship. Won a gold medal at the All Island Schools Championship in 2017 and in 2019 another gold medal at the Junior weightlifting championship both in the 89 Kg. weight category. Placed 1st in the 93 Kg. weight class at the selection Competition of the Junior World Powerlifting Championship in 2019.

As a School boy, he was selected as the Most Popular Sportsman of the year at the Presidential Award Ceremony held in 2016.

He hopes to continue weightlifting as his father and two grandfathers and involve in weightlifting till he is fit to do so.
