Quarterfinalists await resumption of tournament

Defending champion St. Joseph’s College Colombo, Mahanama College, Gurukula College Kelaniya, Trinity College Kandy, Nalanda College, Prince of Wales College Moratuwa, St. Thomas’ College Matara and St. Anthony’s College Katugastota who have qualified for the quarterfinal round of  the ‘Singer Trophy’ Under 19 Division One inter-schools cricket (2-day) tournament await the green light from the health authorities and the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association to play their quarterfinal fixtures.

The quarterfinal line up:

St. Joseph’s College Colombo v Mahanama College, Gurukula College Kelaniya v Trinity College Kandy, Nalanda College v Prince of Wales College Moratuwa, and St. Thomas’ College Matara v St. Anthony’s College Katugastota.

Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic the tournament along with the under 13 (division III) was suspended from March 15.

At that point of time seven players had topped 1000 runs for the season - Pawan Ratnayake (Mahanama), Muditha Premadasa (Maliyadeva Kurunegala), Avishka Perera (Nalanda), Dunith Jayatunge (St. Sebastian’s Moratuwa), Sheran Fonseka (St. Joseph’s Colombo), Muditha Lakshan (D.S. Senanayake) and Avishka Tharindu (St. Anthony’s Wattala).

Avishka Perera and Muditha Lakshan had also passed the 1000-run milestone in the 2018/19 season as well. Navod Paranavithana of Mahinda College Galle established a new batting record in Sri Lanka cricket at any level scoring a monumental 409 against Dharmasoka College Ambalangoda with 39 fours and 19 sixes off 327 balls. His marathon innings helped Mahinda to a mammoth total of 679 runs off 132 overs which is the highest innings total at school level in the country.  Prior to Navod’s innings, Avishka Tharindu of St. Anthony’s College Wattala scored 350 against Lumbini College Colombo. Pawan Ratnayake (Mahanama) also shone with the bat scoring unbeaten hundreds (200 n.o. & 100 n.o.) against Prince of Wales College Moratuwa.

The leading wicket-taker of the season is St. Thomas College Matara left-arm leg-spinner Sineth Dissanayake with 95 wickets. His best performance in an innings is 8 wickets for 19 runs against St. Mary’s College Kegalle.

The best bowling performance in an innings for the season is by Praveen Nimesh, Gurukula College Kelaniya’s left-arm fast bowler who captured  9 wickets for 13 runs against St. Servatius College Matara. The best match bag is by Dharmasoka College Ambalangoda left-arm leg-spinner Lohan de Zoysa who took 14 wickets for 68 runs against Prince of Wales College Moratuwa. 

Lohan de Zoysa is also the leading all-rounder for the season scoring 801 runs with 3 centuries and capturing 83 wickets in 12 matches.
