Two Lankan veteran cricketers stranded in SA

Two over 50 Sri Lankan cricketers are stranded in South Africa due to the world wide coronavirus clampdown.

The two cricketers Suranjith Dharmasena, a prominent player at Thurstan College, Tamil Union and the Sri Lanka over 50 team and Mahesh de Zoysa a former Ananda  College cricketer who is the Assistant Manager of the over 50 team accompanied by his wife left along with the team to participate in the Over 50 World Cup played in Cape Town. The tournament came to a standstill on 15 March as some of the countries were planning to lockdown. Dharmasena and De Zoysa planned to leave on 19 March by the latest date they could get back to Colombo. But they couldn’t as the Bandaranaike International Airport was completely shut down.

The Over 50 World Cup was scheduled to take place from March 10 to 26 in South Africa. According to the vice-captain of the Sri Lankan over 50 team and former Media Manager of Sri Lanka cricket Shane Fernando the stranded players are safe in their hotel in Johannesburg.
