Major sporting events have been halted over here in Kandy. Growing fears related to the global spread of coronavirus have begun to manifest themselves into official decisions to postpone, alter or cancel sporting events. Sports organizers of sporting events are weighing whether to take immediate action or adopt a wait-and-see approach.
What is known at this point is that these entities are acknowledging that the disease presents some sort of threat to their plans. As such, here's a rundown of where some of the biggest sports in Kandy stand with their plans surrounding the virus.
The March-April months are the biggest schools cricket sporting event of the year, and organizers have already voiced concerns that the disease could cause problems for the event and out of the seven big matches six are halted.
The virus has forced all sports bodies to postpone their events. Cricket, hockey, rugby, basketball, tennis have all fallen victim to the virus.
The main sport which keeps Kandy proud rugby has been called off and out of the seven inter-school cricket Big matches, only one was played and all other games have been halted.
Then in other cricket all three tournaments of the Kandy District Cricket Association 6-a-side, including the inter-club tournament have been cancelled, the cycling events suspended, schools tennis postponed and sports like Basketball, Swimming, Athletics, Table Tennis, Chess and Carrom halted. The Kandy District Hockey Association league, knockouts and 6-a-side in April and May are also cancelled
