ASP Dehigama keen to revive hockey in Kandy

Former Nalanda College hockey player Nipuna Dehigama, who is one of the ASP’s in the Kandy Police speaks his heart out when it come to his first love, hockey. He is all out to give his best for hockey with the support of SSP Sudath Masinghe.

At one time Kandy police did well in hockey. It was at the Kandy Police grounds hockey was first played in Kandy in 1907 when the Indian Rajput Regiment were housed. At that time the ground was called the Military Barracks, now known as Police Barracks.

In the 1960’s and 1970’s there was a cop by the name of S.M. David who was in charge of the grounds, he gave a big hand for the game. He was a top coach and umpire.

At one time Kandy Police played in the Kandy District Hockey Association organized, sevens, league and knockouts.

Dehigama is a product of Nalanda College where he excelled in hockey from 1983 to 1987, and led the school team in 1986 and later played for Police, and led the side in 1993. He later played for State Services in the nationals and for the country.

Kandy District Hockey Association led by R. Maheswan is all out to give a hand to promote the game.
