Captain’s sore eyes results in CR forfeiting Police match

The Dialog ‘A’ Division League second round rugby match between Police SC and CR&FC came to an abrupt end after 20 minutes in the second half with the Policemen leading 27-16 when the CR&FC players walked off the field protesting against the referee’s decision for not allowing their captain Omalka Gunaratne to continue playing at Police Park yesterday.

The incident occurred when Police players brought to the notice of the referee that the CR&FC captain had sore eyes and the doctor in attendance who examined him confirmed that he is suffering from sore eyes. Later the referee P. Veranga awarded victory to Police SC after

consulting the match commissioner.

The CR skipper had not taken the field at the start of play but only come in during the second half.

Police’s 27 points came from two goals, two tries and penalty while CR&FC’s 16 came from one goal and three penalties. For the Police, No. 8 Kavinda Jayasundara (two), prop forward Ashan Fernando (one) and centre Emoci Venivalu (one) scored the tries with fly half Yohan Peris converting two tries and putting over the penalty.

For CR&FC, winger Janidu Dilshan scored the only try with full back Riza Mubarak converting it and also firing across three penalties.
