Exchangers were even at the end of the first day’s play in the 57th Battle of the Brothers cricket encounter between Thurstan College and Isipathana College for the Blackham Wijewardena Trophy which began at the SSC grounds yesterday.
Isipathana who were put into bat first made a modest 210 but hit back to capture five Thurstan wickets for 131 by the close.
Isipathana were off to a shock start when opener Thevindu Dickwella was dismissed in the very first over of the match when he was caught by Thineth Prabuddha off the bowling of paceman Bavantha Jayasinghe who went onto take two more wickets and had Isipathana reeling at 37 for 4.
At this stage skipper Leshan Amarasinghe joined by Savindu Uthsara rescued the side with a fine partnership of 117 runs for the fifth wicket. Leshan made a valuable 65 inclusive of nine fours and Sandaru a top score of 70 including two sixes and seven fours.
After their departure Isipathana’s batting collapsed once again with the last five wickets falling for 56 runs. Jayasinghe finished with 4 wickets for 53 runs and left-arm leg-spinner
Dananja Silva ended up taking 3 wickets for 33.
Thurstan going to bat after the tea break were also in a spot of bother losing the first four wickets for 55 runs. But Vihanga Jayanama joined by Bavantha Jayasinghe put together a fifth wicket stand of 51. Vihanga was caught by Dinath Dissanayake off the bowling of Sethuka for 33.
Jayasinghe remained unbeaten on 55 runs with eight fours and a lot will depend on him if Thurstan is to get anywhere close to Isipathana’s total. So far Jayasinghe’s had a splendid game following his four-wicket haul with an unbeaten half-century.
Dinath Dissanayake was the most impressive of the Isipathana bowlers claiming two wickets for 35 runs.
