Kandy SC rally to beat CR 39/15

Defending champs Kandy Sports Club rallied well to beat CR & FC by 39 (3 goals, 3 tries and 1 penalty) to 15 (1 goal, 1 try and 1 penalty) in their Dialog ‘A’ division inter-club second round rugby match played at Nittawela yesterday.

Kandy kept their winning streak alive by presenting a good game of run and pass rugby. They had lengthy possession, and the CR & FC defence was able to ward off the attack and play a good game and allowed only two tries to be scored against them in the first half. Kandy had to fight hard in the first half to lead 10-3 at the halfway mark.

From the start it was evident that the men from Nittawela were determined to knock the daylights out of the Red-shirts, but their perfection was knocked by the fast running CR and FC three-quarters.

After the turn over Kandy SC play revolved around their forwards who pressurized the opposition with every move. They settled down very early and drew first blood through a superb try in the second half. Their forwards and threes combined very well and every move was ably assisted by the linkman. The forwards were a picture of level headedness playing according to the demands of the game. Their top set of backline players consolidated by working-out ploys with regular frequency to steer the course of the game.

CR & FC got off to a good start with the forwards playing with determination. They also had the opportunity of scoring points, but Kandy SC’s tackles fumbled them. The better side won because they played with the will to win. It was Kandy’s 12th win in a row.

Scorers for Kandy SC: Tries - Damith Dissanayake (two), Buddima Priyaratne, Buwanaka Udangamuwa, Bawantha Udangamuwa and Srinath Sooriyabandara one each. The kicking part was done by Tharindu Ratwatte.

Scorers for CR and FC: Tries - Supun Warnakulasooriya and Kevin Dixon one each. Kicking by Murshid Zubair.

Referee: Priyantha Gunaratne; Match Commissioner: Denzil Darling.
