Badulla District athlete Chandrakumar Aravindahan established the first meet record when he clocked 1:54:24 seconds in the men’s 800m at the 31st National Youth Sports Festival continued at the North Central Provincial Sports Complex Anuradhapura yesterday .
Aravindahan broke the record set by MTB Silva (1:54:40) from Kalutara district in 2002. The Festival commenced on Thursday with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa gracing the opening ceremony.
Colombo District dominated the points tally with 49 and Gampaha District are placed second with 37 points two points ahead of Kurunegala who are in third place with 35.
Nearly 3,000 sportsmen and women representing all districts including Northern and Eastern provinces will participate at the festival. The players will compete in two age group categories (Over 20 and Under 20) in 64 track and field events.
