Around 2,000 athletes to compete in ISAC

International Schools Athletic Championship is the most important co-curricular event in the school calendar of all international schools which commenced in 2001 and was the brainchild of the founder, late R.I.T. Alles of Gateway College, has now established itself as the flagship sporting event of the country's international schools affiliated with The International Schools of Sri Lanka(TISSL).

Around 2,000 athletes from 23 reputed international schools will compete at the meet from February 14 to 16 at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

The following international schools competing in this year’s ISAC are: Asian, Alethea, Belvoir, British School, Burhani Serendib, CIS Colombo and Kandy, Elizabeth Moir, Gateway – Colombo and Kandy, Leeds, Lyceum –Nugegoda, Panadura, Ratnapura and Wattala, Ilma, OKI, Royal Institute,Stafford, Wycherley – Colombo and Gampaha, St. Nicholas and Horizon International College are the newcomers to the championship.

Lyceum International School, Wattala won the overall title with 36 golds and 84 total medals while Gateway College, Colombo became runners-up with 24 Golds and 57 total medals in the last year’s championship.

The championship will be conducted in accordance with the competition rules and regulations of both TISSL as well as the InternationalAssociation of Athletic Federations (IAAF) and will include electronic timing and measurements. The event is fully computerised with web-based entries to instantly access results and scores over the internet through the ISAC websitewww.isaclk.com, designed and developed by the Gateway Consultancy Services. The website will provide all necessary information including past meet records, the current sponsorship proposal and a full list of competitors for this year’s meet.

“Since the inaugural competition, the standard of athletics among international schools has gradually advanced to an extent where several athletes have now reached national and international levels, providing much required competition at the highest levels. Athletes of the calibre of Shehan Ambepitiya Shelinda Jansen, Sadeepa Henderson, Sachini Divyanjalee and Kavindu Bandara are a few such examples,” Dr. Harsha Alles, Chairman of ISAC 2020 Organizing Committee and Gateway Group said at a media briefing held at SCC Auditoriumon Wednesday. The Managing Director of Gateway Group Mrs. Rohini Alles will be the Chief Guest at the opening ceremony which will be held on Saturday (15) at 8.00 am while Minister of Foreign Relations, Skills Development, Employment,Labour Relations and Leader of the House of Parliament Dinesh Gunawardena will grace the closing ceremony as the Chief Guest on Sunday at 3.00 pm.

Ceylon Biscuits Ltd (CBL) and Edexel-Pearson signed up as the Principal Sponsors of the event while Home Lands, Hatton National Bank, DSI Samson Group, Airtel, How To Drive Driving School, Oxford University Press,Asiri Health and Gateway Graduate School tied-up as the Co-Sponsors.
