Mahinda Old Boys continue winning streak for 4th consecutive year

Mahinda College Galle old boys team emerged “Olcott Challenge Trophy” champions for the 4th consecutive year as the ‘Sir Henry Steel Olcott Memorial Old Boys Cricket tournament’ worked off at the Galle International Cricket stadium on Sunday.

The eight leading Buddhist school teams participated namely Ananda Colombo, Dharmaraja - Kandy, Mahinda - Galle, Maliyadava - Kurunegala, Dharmashoka - Ambalangoda, Rahula - Matara, Nalanda - Colombo and Dharmapala - Pannipitiya. The first round was played on league basis into two groups.

Nalanda Colombo and Dharmaraja Kandy qualified to semifinal from group ‘A’ and unbeaten Mahinda Galle and Dharmaraja Kandy advanced to the semifinal from Group ‘B’.

Nalanda and Dharmaraja semifinal was ended as a tie and winner was decided by toss. Dharmaraja Kandy won the toss and advanced to the final. Mahinda Galle beat Dharmasoka Ambalangoda in the other semifinal.

Mahinda Old Boy’s team beat Dharmaraja Old Boy’s team by 4 runs in the final.

Former Sri Lankan Cricketers Arjuna Ranatunge (Ananda), Sanjeewa Ranatunge (Ananda), Upul Chandana (Mahinda), Ranjith Madurusinghe (Maliyadeva), Gamini Perera (Dharmapala), Pramodya Wickramasinghe (Rahula), Ishara Amarasinghe (Nalanda) and Saman Jayantha (Dharmasoka) participated in this tournament.

B.P. Nilan (Mahinda Cricket team Captain 1979) was the chief guest at the award ceremony. Deppal Pitigala (Secretary, Mahnda OBA-UK), Jayantha Senevirathne (Former President of Col. Henry Olcott Sports Foundation) and Upul Sumathipala (President Col. Henry Olcott Sports Foundation) were also participated.

Man of the final – Hirantha Wijesinghe (Mahinda)

Best batsman of the tournament – Dinusha Bandara (Dharmaraja)

Best bowler of the tournament – Upul Chandana (Mahinda)

Best fielder of the tournament – M.M. Tharanga (Mahinda)
