Former Zahira College boxer Roy Packeer who was domiciled in Australia passed away early yesterday morning at ripe age of 86. Janaza took place in the afternoon in Sydney.
Mohamed Nizam Packeer was reputed to be a hard punching flat footed steady boxer who waited to unleash his deadly punches, when he cornered opponents at close quarters.
The Packeers were a boxing family. Roy Packeer’s elder brother the late Mohamed Fareed Packeer was a popular boxer in his heyday for his speed, science, heavy punching and ring craft. He is reported to have fought boxing greats like the Henricus brothers of Royal College fame and some of his bouts are much discussed topics like in the case of former famous boxer late T J Rajudin, during regular post mortems when the Packeer brothers, cousins Sourjahs and the Rajudins met during their regular weekend interactions in the late 60s and 70s.
The fight game was in the family genes of the Packeers. They took much pleasure in the game and boxing always featured in family conversations of yesteryear.
Roy Packeer had reportedly fought and lost a close contest to champion Navy boxer Divitowela, who was considered a knockout specialist. Roy Packeer’s youngest brother the late M N (Wola) Packeer had boxed for the Navy.
He too had been a stylish and scientific boxer. MF Packeer was especially engaged by former Royal College Stubbs shield boxer late M. A. (Tony) Sourjah to instill the finer points of boxing to his son Wazir Sourjah who boxed and captained the Royal College boxing team in 1973.
Roy Packeer leaves behind his beloved wife Surahi Packeer, son Azard, and daughters Fiona, Minuri, Shanee and Shazneen, all domiciled in Sydney. - AO
