Ashan, Jacques reign supreme at Welisara

Ashan Silva and Jacques Gunawardena bagged the Best Driver and the Best Rider Trophies respectively at the Colombo Supercross 2019, at the Naval Motor Racing Track, Welisara recently.

The meet was organized by the Sri Lanka Association of Racing Drivers and Riders (SLARDAR) and Asian Motor Racing Club (AMRC) with the partnership of Hutch Telecommunication (Pvt) Ltd. Colombo Super Series was conducted by the Sri Lanka Navy Motor Racing Club as the final event of Hutch Sri Lanka Super Series.

Eventhough 23 events were planned to be held earlier, the organizing committee has decided to limit them to 21 including 9 riding and 12 driving events.

The most attracting event was the SL/GT 3500 cc car event, as there were only two bonus points gap between Ashan and Kushan. Anyhow Kushan gained the lead as the previous day timing and had a big challenge from Kushan.

Ashan, Kushan, Isharq and Pasindu finished the first round in order. The race consisted of eight rounds. In the second round, Kushan’s vehicle pulled out from the track twice and Isharq got the second place. Eventhough Kushan got back on the track, he had to pull out from the race because his vehicle encountered a technical trouble. Then Ashan had a challenge from Pasindu. Finally Ashan finished the race as the winner. Pasindu and Ishraq Wahab finished the race at second and third places respectively.

The second race of the same event was lined up according to the result of the first race. Ashan, Pasindu Ishraq and Kapila claimed top positions. Kushan got the last place. Ashan and Pasindu had a close fight for the first place and it brought the spectators excitement. Pasindu gave a big challenge to Ashan.

But finally Ashan finished the race as winner. Pasindu and Ishraq got the second and third places respectively.

Jacques Gunawardena, the top level rider finished as the second in the first race of the MX-175-250 cc (4T)/100-125 cc (2T) event. As a teenager Vinushka De Silva won the first place pushing Jacque, Evon, Sameera, Buddika, D M D Kalhara and Banuka Ratnayake down in order. In the second race of the same event, Jacque won the first place showing his usual riding skills. He was the highest bonus point holder of Hutch Super Series. Vinushka and Evon finished in second and third places respectively. SL-H 1600 cc and SL/A 1050 cc events were cancelled due to bad weather. Sandaru Weerasinghe, Kolitha Edirisinghe, Adeesha Kithwith, Shenal Gunawardena, Malika Kuruvitaarachchi, Chamod Samarakoon and Tharindu Dharmaratne won the other driving events.

Veteran driver Indu Samarakoon’s son Chamod Samarakoon won the TG Turbo Diesel 5500 cc event beating many veterans. Kassim Wahab claimed the second place. Manjula Weerasinghe won the third place.

MX- Super Motard 250-750 cc (4T)/125-500 cc (2T) event was the most competitive event among the supporting riding events. Imal Manchanayake and Deshan Solanki competed each other for the first place. Deshan won the first race while Imal Manchanayake won the second race of the same event.

K A D Ravisha Jayashan, Lahiru Jeewantha, Sameera Premaratne, Tharuka Romesh De Silva and Sanuka Jayana Sandaruwan won other supporting riding events. Dineth Mihiranga won two events.

Even though muddy track condition prevailed during the meet, race referees and organizers have well conducted the meet with good management. The riding events were held first changing the usual format because of the mud condition of the terrain. As a result, they were abale to finish the meet without any accidents.
