Sri Lanka Under23 men’s national football squad for the 13th South Asian Games 2019 which is to take place in Nepal leave the island today (Nov. 29).
The Football matches are to be played at the Dasarath Stadium a few kilometers away from the capital Katmandu and will commence on December 1 and end on December 10.
The six teams competing at the Games are grouped as follows: Group ’A’ comprise Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan and Group ‘B’ consists of Sri Lanka, Maldives and India.
The opening game of the soccer championship will be played between hosts Nepal and Bangladesh on Nov. 1. In Group ‘A’ Sri Lanka take on Maldives on November 4 and India on November 6.
Sri Lanka is led by national skipper MNM Fazal who is one of the senior players in the squad. Though the championship is meant for under 23 the organizers have made inroads for four senior players to be included in the squad.
With these two seniors in fine form the side is capable of reaching the top four and look forward for a medal from the Games which the country has failed to achieve so far. With young players doing good work in the past few months while playing a few international matches they are expected to come out with their best.
The Sri Lanka women’s national soccer squad too will be leaving the country on the same day along with the men’s team. The women’s matches are scheduled to be played in Pokhara Stadium
The officials on tour with the men’s soccer squad are head coach Nizam Packeer Ali, goal keeping coach Sampath Bandar, physio M. Basith and manager Sunil Senaweera. The Sri Lanka women’s team is captained by Lakshika Rushani Gunawardene while her deputy will be Ayomi Shanika Wijeratne.
This time only four teams hosts Nepal, Sri Lanka, India and Maldives will battle it out for the Gold medal. These teams will play on a league basis and the top two teams will qualify to play the final. The matches commence on December 3 and the final on December 9.
Nepal meet Sri Lanka on December 3 in the first game. Sri Lanka are coached by Thilak Alponsu, Asst. coach TDDK Samarasinghe, Goal Keeping coach Lalith Weerasinghe and Asst. coach Dhammika Athukorala. Capt. Hiran Ratnayake is the women’s team manager.
