Army and Slimline pugilists poised for supremacy

The cream of Sri Lanka’s boxing talent will be on show at the 93rd BASL (Boxing Association of Sri Lanka) Men and Women Clifford Cup Boxing Championships which will be held at the Royal MAS Arena from October 7 to 11 commencing at 3 p.m. each day.

It will virtually be a duel between Army and last year’s champions Slimline for the coveted Clifford Cup which is a team championship.

Boxers from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, Slimline, Seevali, Unichela, Vidyartha, Peradeniya and Vidyarathana SC and other affiliated boxing clubs will vie for the coveted Clifford Cup at this event.

This competition comes just a week after the BASL conducted a two-day selection sparring session to select boxers for the South Asian Games (SAG) scheduled to be held from December 1 to 9 in Kathmandu, Nepal.

The finalists will form the national pool for SAG with the BASL planning to send 10 men and six women pugilists for the Games.

In a unique move, decisions were not publicly announced on the final day with the national boxing selectors ‘judging’ the bouts to rate the boxers.

“The original seeding has been done by the association. Irrespective of decisions, we wanted that option available to prioritise the boxers according to their technique, skill and ringcraft. The standard in lower weights were good but in my personal opinion some of the boxers were not upto international level,” said General Jagath Jayasuriya, chairman of the boxing selection committee, a former world-class referee/judge himself. Co-selectors Udeni Kiridena, Susantha Weerasena and Olympian Anuruddha Ratnayake were also present during the meet.

The finalists are as follows:
