Trinity break 42-year-old hoodoo to win U19 rugby sevens

Trinity College led by Reshan Bandaranayake won the inter-schools rugby sevens under 19 tournament after 42 years when they beat St Peter’s College 5-0 in the Cup final played at the Pallekele grounds yesterday.

Both schools played a good game of sevens rugby and the Trinitians got a special gift when Janidu Ratnayake scored the match winning try despite a last ditch effort by the Peterites proved a vain effort.

Trinity last won the title in 1977 under the captaincy of Ravi Balasuriya.

The two-day tournament saw Royal College win the Plate, Science College the Bowl and Moratu MV the Shield.

Results (all finals): Champion Cup - Trinity College, Runner-up - St. Peter’s College, Champion Plate - Royal College, Runner-up – St. Anthony’s College, Champion Bowl - Science College, Runner-up – Dharmaraja College, Champions Shield - Moratu MV, Runner-up - Richmond College.

The organising party was poor as there were no proper officials even to give the correct result of the matches. The rugby presented by the participants was excellent.
