Sports Minister cuts sod to inaugurate Bogambara synthetic track

Sports Minister Harin Fernando (blue shirt) cuts the first sod to inaugurate the Bogambara Stadium synthetic track with Cabinet Minister Lucky Jayawardena.

Minister of Sports, Telecommunication & Foreign Employment, Harin Fernando cut the first sod to inaugurate the construction of a Rs. 37 million synthetic track at the Bogambara Stadium, Kandy yesterday.

Cabinet Minister Lucky Jayawardena also took part at the ceremony.

The Mayor of Kandy Kesara Senanayake, Thilina Tennakoon, president of the

KDCA, Government Agent/Provincial Secretary, Tissa Karunaratne, Dinuk

Wijeratne, Officer in charge of Sugathadasa Stadium, Sarath Wijesinghe, MMC Kandy, S.K. Gajanayake, Chief Manager, BOC Kandy, Daya Withanage, DSO, Kandy and S. Withanage in charge of Bogambara grounds were also present at the occasion.

The Sports said that when the construction of the synthetic track is completed this ground can produce Olympic athletes like Susanthika Jayasinghe and said that this will be the first synthetic track after the Sugathadasa Stadium.

He also said that he will construct a similar track at Badulla playgrounds as it is his native district.

The Minister further said that the ICC has banned bookmakers to be elected to sports bodies and that he wants to apply the same regulation to other local sports bodies as well.
