India edge through against Afghanistan to maintain unbeaten record

India Under 19 topped their group and remained unbeaten after a hard fought win against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup under 19 cricket tournament match played at the Colombo Cricket Club grounds yesterday.

Karan Lal and Purnank Tyagi were involved in a 22-run unbroken stand for the eighth wicket to take India under 19 through to a three-wicket win in what was a nervous chase for the Indian batsmen.

Noor Ahmad Lakanwal’s double strike in the same over reduced India U19 to four down in the chase. Noor was the star for Afghanistan with 4/30 in 10 overs.

The win enabled defending champions India to top their group and they will take on the losers of tomorrow’s game between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the semi-finals.

Afghanistan was dismissed for 124 despite a disciplined batting performance from their openers Sediqullah Atal (25) and Farhan Zakhail (29) who put on 51. Sushant Mishra picked up a 5-wicket haul while Atharva Ankolekar scalped 4 wickets for 16 runs. He was named Man of the Match.

Meanwhile, Qasim Akram’s four-wicket haul swayed the game in favour of Pakistan U19 against Kuwait U19 in a high scoring match at the De Soysa Stadium in Moratuwa. A mammoth 335 for nine by Pakistan with three half-centuries saw them win by 163 runs. Irfan Khan, Mohammad Wasim, Mohammad Haris Khan and off-break bowler Qasim Akram were the heroes.

Abdul Sadiq backed his performance with the ball and top scored for Kuwait U19 with 60.

Off-spinner Qasim Akram picked up four wickets as Pakistan bowled out Kuwait for 172 inside 44 overs.

Mohammad Haris fell for 53 as Abdul Sadiq (3/70) broke the 73-run stand for the third wicket.
