Dankotuwa MV’s Hiruki de Silva smashes 14-year-old record

Hiruki de Silva hailing from a small school Dankotuwa Maha Vidyalaya shattered a 14-year-old record set by Methma Jayawickrama of Musaeus College in the Under 16 girls 200m freestyle event clocking 2 minutes 24.07 seconds in the 46th Milo Sri Lanka Schools Nationals held at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

Bihandu Hansana from Devananda MV also broke a 10-year-old record held by Sachin Kumarajeewa of St Joseph College in the U14 200m freestyle event clocking 2:13.30.

I.M. Haathim of St. Peter’s College clocked 3:01.77 to win the Boys U10 200m Individual Medley as the youngest swimmer. Vandani Fernando of Kalutara Balika Vidyalaya established a record in the Girls’ U12 50m Backstroke event. Her final lap of 38.18 sec beat the previous record for her first gold medal at this year’s meet. In the Boy’s category of the same event, A. Siriwardena of Wesley College beat the previous record by 0.6 seconds. He clocked 35.53 seconds to win gold.

Oneli Yahampath of Lyceum International School, Nugegoda renewed the Girl’s U14 100m Fly record clocking 1:10.78. Yahampath went on to clinch another record in the 200m IM event with a time of 2:41.68.

Vihanga Caldera of St. Peter’s College clinched two gold medals along with two records on the first day of the meet. He clocked in at 1:12.11 in the Boys U12 100m Butterfly to smash the previous record of 1:16.04.

Caldera also went on to renew the record in the U12 50m Freestyle with a time of 30.01 to win his second gold medal of the day. S.D. Siriwardena of Princess of Wales won the Girls U14 100m Breaststroke event in a time of 1:23.17 erasing the record of 1:24.04 set last year by Thinaya Jayarathne.

Bihandu Hansana of Sri Devananda College closed out the day with a record in the Boys U14 200m IM with a time of 2:31.49.
