Army’s Danushka Deepal Bandara representing Anuradhapura District and 20-year-old Pujani Sandupama from Polonnaruwa were adjudged the Best Boxers at the North Central Province Boxing Selection Trials for the 45th National Sports Festival held at National Sports Complex in Polonnaruwa on Tuesday.
Bandara, a winner at the Novices meet, displayed good ringcraft and technique to outpoint a tough rival from Polonnaruwa Sampath Perera to win the Light weight final by a unanimous decision. Lanky Bandara, 27, from the Artillery regiment used his reach to advantage to blunt the aggressive Perera who attempted to close the distance with looping left hooks and right crosses. Bandara displayed sound defence and unleashed combinations to assert his authority battling on gamely after an accidental head butt saw him bleeding profusely for a cut above the left eye in the final minute of the contest.
Sandupama, a karate champion in kumite for the past nine years, displayed her boxing talent to win the Light weight final against Kumarasinghe, also from Polonnaruwa. Sandupama paced herself during the contest, attacking in short sharp bursts, to outpoint her rival by a split decision.
