Skipper Asalanka hopeful of repeating South Africa success in Bangladesh

Sri Lanka Emerging team skipper Charith Asalanka addresses the press conference at SLC headquarters yesterday. Head coach Chaminda Vaas is also present. The team will be managed by Chaminda Mendis.

Sri Lanka’s Emerging cricket team left for Bangladesh yesterday to play 3 one-dayers and 2 unofficial tests.

The series will begin from August 19 with the ODI leg and conclude on September 6. The team is scheduled to return on September 7 after a 23-day tour.

Charith Asalanka who led Sri Lanka Emerging team to be crowned champions in the 50-over tri-series held in South Africa will captain the side to Bangladesh.

“I want to thank Sri Lanka Cricket for this opportunity as this is our second Emerging tour for the year. We played really well in the South Africa. I have been given a good squad and hope to do well in Bangladesh too,” said Asalanka addressing a press conference before departure at the SLC headquarters yesterday.

He further stated that hopefully more players will get the opportunity to play for the national team through this squad.

Head coach of the Emerging team, Chaminda Vaas said, “I always say that the Emerging stage is a learning curve and they do a lot of mistakes. The South African tour was a really good one as our players played really well there. It’s going to be a tough tour to Bangladesh as they are playing good cricket and they have competent youngsters. It will be a good challenge for our players to assess their skills there.”

This will be a great opportunity for Sri Lanka’s Emerging squad to perform ahead of the Asian Emerging teams’ tournament which will be hosted by Bangladesh in December.

Spinner Sachindu Colombage who was to make his debut in the Emerging squad has been injured and will be replaced by 22-year-old Wanindu Hasaranga who will play only in the one-day series in Bangladesh and return to Sri Lanka to take-part in the T20I leg of the New Zealand tour.
