Hussain Ahmed Mohamed Rimzan of Moors Sports Club blitzed 18-year-old S.M. Thaha of MICH by six frames to nil in the final of the 67th National Snooker Championships at the AAC (Automobile Association of Ceylon) yesterday.

Rimzan claimed his maiden national snooker title in style, ending the best of 11-frame final as a contest by winning all five frames in the first session.

The 27-year-old cueist, who has represented Sri Lanka at the Asian championship both as a junior and senior, displayed his maturity with a masterclass against talented teenager Thaha who entered the final by outclassing veteran Army player M.M. Mubeen 5-0 in the semifinal.

Rimzan, who has been in the national rankings for the past nine years, winning the national billiards title last year and being runner-up this year, reeled off breaks of 49, 42, and 39 to clinch the first four frames easily.

Thaha staged a comeback of sorts when he took the lead in the fifth frame with crucials break of 22 and break but choked on a black and the final red when he could have cleared the table.

Luck really seemed to have deserted Thaha who conceded fouls after the cue ball went in twice at crucial moments.

Rimzan clawed his way to clinch the closely contested fifth frame 68/67 after sinking the pink and black.

“I wish to thank my coach Ameer Mukhtar for helping me to win this title,” said Rimzan who won the sixth frame 75/05 to seal victory.

Organized by the Billiards and Snooker Association of Sri Lanka, the championship was played for the U.W. Sumathipala Memorial Trophy and sponsored by Sumathi Group of Companies. Jagath Sumathipala was the chief guest and gave away the awards.
