Over 200 competitors for Gajaba Supercross

The 18th edition of Gajaba Supercross 2019 will flag off from 8.30 a.m. on September 1 at the supercross track - Home of the Gajaba, Saliyapura, Anuradhapura. The Gajaba Supercross is an annual sporting extravaganza patronaged by the Gajaba Regiment of Sri Lanka Army in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Autosport Drivers Association (SLADA).

Over 200 outstanding motor car and motorcycle competitors all over the island will showcase their skills through 24 events at the Gajaba Supercross. There will be special events for children as well. This years race will be conducted with the guidance and supervision of Commander of the Sri Lanka Army and Colonel of the Regiment of the Gajaba Regiment, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc who aspired to maintain and enhance the reputation of Gajaba Supercross, for excellence in the motor racing fraternity.

The premier gravel motor racing was introduced in Sri Lanka for local enthusiasts by then Commandant of the Sri Lanka Military Academy, late Major General Gamini Gunasekara who was also a proud Keterian, back in 1993 in cooperation with Hans Ralf Karpinsky who designed the track in the cool hills of Diyatalawa. This initiative paved the way to race off the Gajaba Supercross in the year 1999 at Saliyapura as the inaugural racing event in the North Central Province. The unique and the challenging track was designed by local motor racing enthusiast Hans Ralf, and Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva and Major General Chargie Gallage (Retd) also made every effort to make it a reality; thus, proud Keterians are the initiators of gravel motor racing in the island.

The Gajaba Supercross has come leaps and bounds in the last few years and is considered as the most looked forward to event in the motor racing calendar in Sri Lanka; giving thrilling experiences and spectators are gathered in numbers in every year to catch the glimpse of ace drivers and riders.

The Gajaba Regiment was inaugurated on October 14, 1983 under the able leadership of late Major General Vijaya Wimalaratne the founder father of the regiment. His inspiring leadership influenced the officers and men in the regiment to become great warriors and the Keterians are known to be dynamic battle heroes in the Sri Lanka Army, but they can also be charming and delightful in the peace. Thus,they also engage and excelled in several other extra curricular activities and the success of the regiment founded on a binding ethos underpinned by the core values of learning, honour, excellence, innovation, camaraderie and pristine environment.

The objective of the Gajaba supercross is to generate much needed funds to improve the welfare facilities of differently able soldiers and the families of soldiers killed in action, as well as to improve the infrastructure facilities of the Regiment whilst popularizing motor racing in the North Central Province.

Air voice International (Pvt) Ltd is the Main Sponsor and Singer Sri Lanka PLC, Hutch Telecom (Pvt) Ltd,CEAT Kelani Holding (Pvt) Ltd, Lanka Hospital PLC will hold hands providing financial assistance as the Co-Sponsors. Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation and Channel Eye will telecast the event live as the electronic media partner.
