There were more brawls than boxing on the opening day of the 79th Layton Cup Boxing Championship at the Royal MAS Arena on Tuesday.
Organized by the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka (BASL), 125 men and 37 women have entered for this competition from which the final pool for South Asian Games 2019 scheduled to be held in Kathmandu, Nepal from December 1 to 9 would be selected.
But the fare dished out in the preliminary round barring for a handful of bouts lacked the quality expected in a championship making it difficult for even judges to determine the actual winner in some contests where the decision was split.
There were 28 bouts listed on the fight card but some made a mockery of this hallowed tournament by being absent at the weigh-in after registering for the tournament.
However, there was some semblance of technical excellence in the lighter weights with former Vidyartha College, Kandy schoolboys Isanka Sanjaya and H.M. Navith impressing in the Light Fly (49kg) weight class. Sanjaya provided the opening spark when he knocked out Air Force’s Pushpakumara in the third round while Navith pulled out all stops to earn a split decision against Army’s Nadeeka Kumara.
Bronze medallist at the Indonesian President’s Cup Gayan Indika Bandara won a unanimous decision against Army’s Divakara.
Intermediates tournament Best Boxer Rukmal Prasanna of Police won a rousing contest against Silueta’s Manaram in a Bantom weight (56kg) contest using his quick silver footwork to outgun his taller adversary and earn a unanimous decision.
