The inaugural Dialog National Junior Under 23 Volleyball Championship sponsored by Sri Lanka’s premier connectivity provider, Dialog Axiata PLC together with Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation (SLVF) to boost country’s national sport will begin today at Viharamahadevi Park, Colombo in parallel to International Youth Day.
Over 1,625 teams from 25 districts will participate in the competition to be worked off during a period of three months. The top 100 teams from the inter-district level will be picked after a three-day playoff and then proceed to the national level with the finals scheduled to be held at National Youth Services Council Indoor Stadium, Maharagama in December.
The tournament is the brainchild of the President of the Volleyball Federation of Sri Lanka and Minister of Power and Renewable Energy Ranjith Siyambalapitiya. The main objective of this tournament is to identify the talented players in the country and provide them with proper training to the national level so that they can enter the international arena, the Secretary of Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation A.S. Nalaka said at a press briefing held at BMICH.
Sri Lanka Under 23 volleyball team has made significant inroads at international levels and achieved a top-eight finish at the recently concluded Asia Junior Men’s Volleyball Championship in Yangon, Myanmar.
