Buwaneka Gunatilleka, Sachin Dias and Thilini Hendahewa clinched doubles titles at the Northern Province Open Badminton championships recently concluded at the Anuradhapura Municipality Indoor Stadium and Michael Cooke Indoor Stadium.
Gunatilleka and Hendahewa won the men’s and women’s open singles titles by defeating Ranthushka Sasindu and Achini Ratnasiri respectively in the finals . Buwaneka Gunatilleka came up with a superb performance to beat Ranthushka in two straight sets 21-17, 21-11 while current National champion Thilini Hendahewa had a tough battle to beat former National champion Achini Ratnasiri 21-15 and 21-18 to clinch the title .
Meanwhile Buwaneka Gunatilleka and Sachin Dias the number one National men’s doubles pair easily defeated Hasitha Chanaka and R.S Kasun by 21/16, 21/16. Sachin Dias and Thilini Hendahewa the number one mixed doubles pair had a straight sets win over Maduka Dulanjana and Dilmi Dias 21/12, 21/12 while Achini Ratnasiri and Upuli Weeraisinghe won the men’s doubles title defeating Kavindika Binari and Dilmi Dias 21/12, 21/12.
Meanwhile Kodituwakku Hemantha and Upendra Jayawardena won the Masters over 35 and over 40 finals respectively . Netmi Amaya and Wedaka Gomes won the girls and boys under 11 titles while Hiruka Sahanmith and Situki Gunawardena won the boys and girls under 13 finals.Eman Delpachitra and Rashmi Bhagya clinched boys and girls under 15 titles while Vidara Suhasti and Dumidu Abeywickrama won the girls and boys under 17 titles . Tulith Palliyaguru had a three setter game to beat Nadun Punchihewa in the boys under 19 final while Dilmi Dias beat Jananuwani Amanda to win the girls under 19 title.
Parakrama Basnayake Vice President of the Sri Lanka Badminton Association was the chief guest and gave away the awards.
