It was celebration time for Wennappuwa hockey lovers as the Wennappuwa under 21 girls team held their nerves to beat fancied Kandy girls by 2 goals to 1, to claim the gold in the Sri Lanka Hockey Association under 21 final played at the Astro turf at Torrington square on Sunday.
In the preliminary round, a total of twenty games were played in this three-day tournament, but the sad part was, Matale girls were not seen in action.
This may be the first time the Matale team did not take part. Wennappuwa girls side, playing to a plan, outplayed the opponents to win the title. Kandy DHA team packed with some top players, attacked well and defended efficiently but failed to score.
On the way to the finals Kandy girls were able to beat Sri Lanka schools “Golds” by 3 goal to 1 and Wennappuwa girls gave a good display to beat Colombo girls on penalty shootout after the game ended in a draw.
