Former Sri Lanka Cricketer Amitha de Costa dies

Former Thurstan, Nomads CC and Sri Lanka cricketer Amitha de Costa died on Saturday at the age of 70 years after a brief illness and his funeral took place at the General Cemetery, Borella yesterday.

De Costa a dogged opening batsman played for Thurstan College in 1968 and 69 along with players of the calibre of Upali Bandarathillake, Kumar Devapura, Diyanesh Rajaratnam, Saliya Wijewardena and Niroshan de Silva.

After leaving school he turned out for Nomads Cricket Club and the finest moment of his cricketing career came in 1973 when he was picked to play for Sri Lanka against the visiting England cricket team led by Tony Lewis at the P. Sara Oval in the unofficial test. He defied the fiery England pace attack comprising John Lever and Tony Greig for over 60 minutes to make a patient 12 runs.
