A superb partnership of 91 runs of 108 balls by two left-handers Umayanga Suwaris and Kalana Perera took S.Thomas’ College Mt. Lavinia from a hopeless 169 for 8 to a commanding total of 296 all out in their first innings on the second day of the three-day 140th Battle of the Blues cricket encounter against Royal College played at the SSC grounds yesterday.
By the close the Royal who were dismissed for 158 in their first innings had wiped out the deficit of 138 scoring 148 runs for the loss of 4 wickets to lead overall by 10 runs with six wickets in hand.
The Thomians resuming at their overnight score of 158 for the loss of six wickets lost their seventh wicket at 162 when Ravindu de Silva was clean bowled by fast bowler Lahiru Madushanka for 2.
They lost their eighth wicket at 169 when the other overnight batsman Dilmin Ratnayake was caught behind by Kavindu Madarasinghe off fast bowler Kavindu Pathiratne for 3.
Left-handed all-rounder Kalana Perera joined another left-hander Umayanga Suwaris with the side struggling at 169 for 8 and did a superb repair job by putting together a stand of 91 runs off 108 balls to frustrate the Royal bowlers. Kalana made a classic knock of 63 off 59 balls that included nine fours and one six, and along with Suwaris took the Thomian total to some respectability.
Their threatening stand was broken by Pathiratne who had Kalana caught brilliantly at deep extra cover by a diving Kaushan Kulasuriya with the score on 260.
The Thomian innings ended when Suwaris was run out by Titira Weerasinghe for a fine knock of 62 scored off 109 balls with nine hits to the ropes. Last man Shanon Fernando gave him good support by remaining unbeaten on 5 putting together a useful stand of 36 runs for the last wicket.
Fast bowler Pathiratne and spinner Kamil Mishara took three wickets apiece and left arm spinner Gishan Balasuriya had two.
Royal’s left handed openers Mishara and Isiwara Dissanayake got their side off to a superb start with a 54-run partnership. Mishara who went for a rash stroke was brilliantly caught at fourth slip by Shalin de Mel off Kalana Perera for a well made 34 off 58 balls with six fours.
When the score read 68 they lost their second wicket when left hander Isiwara was bowled by a beauty from right arm fast bowler Shalin de Mel for 20 off 77 balls with two fours.
Royal lost their third wicket at 105 when inform batsman cum captain Kavindu Madarasinghe went for a late cut to be caught at first slip by Shalin de Mel off left arm spinner Shannon Fernando for a well compiled 25 scored off 50 deliveries inclusive of five fours. Just before the close at 111 Royal suffered another blow when right hander Ahan Sanchitha who was batting well was caught behind by captain Sithara Hapuhinna off Kalana for a well made 26 off 50 balls with three fours.
At close Bhagya Dissanayake 16 and Kavindu Pathiratne 20 were at the crease having put on a valuable unbroken partnership of 37 for the fifth wicket.
