St Sylvester’s 224/9 on rain hit first day

Avindu Herath came to St Sylvester’s rescue with a fighting half century to see them recover from a shaky 115-5 to 224-9 by the close of the first day of their 61st Battle of the Babes cricket encounter against Vidyartha College at the Pallekele International Stadium yesterday.

Put into bat first Vidyartha bowlers spun a web around the Sylvestrian batting reducing them to 115-5 at lunch and then 164-8 before a ninth wicket partnership of 60 between Herath and Nishantha Jayawardene carried them to 224-9 by the close brought forward by rain at 3.30 pm. Herath made 76 and Jayawardene was unbeaten on 46 at stumps.

Medunaka Wijetilake who bowled a tight line and length took 4 wickets for 49. The match continues today on the second day.
