Dreary draw in Jaffna Big Match as batsmen dawdle

The 113th Battle of the North cricket match between St. John’s and Jaffna Central ended in a tame draw at the Jaffna Central College grounds yesterday with neither side making any positive attempt to force a result.

Jaffna Central in reply to St John’s first innings of 181 scored 195 after resuming at 59-2. Iyalarasan Kamalarasa top scored with a patient 77 off 239 balls (8 fours) in contrast Viyaskanth Vijayakanth who hit a rapid 41 off 35 balls with 3 sixes and 1 four to give Jaffna Central a narrow first innings lead of 14 runs.

St John’s in their second innings put up a dreary display of batting with their openers sharing an unbroken stand of 121 in 39 overs with Thanujan Christy going onto complete a fifty off 132 balls (9 fours) and his partner Sowmiyan Naganthirarajah 46 not out off 104 balls with 3 sixes and 2 fours.
