Sri Lanka’s National Olympic Committee Secretary General Maxwell de Silva said that they are keen to seek the possibility of training some of our national athletes in Qatar ahead of the IAAF World Championships that is scheduled to be held there later this year.
De Silva said on the face of several encouraging performances at the Commonwealth Games and the Junior Olympics in Rio, the NOC Sri Lanka is keen to pursue their accomplishments in track and field events.
“A few days ago in fact Sri Lanka NOC president Suresh Subramaniam was in Qatar but, owing to unavoidable circumstances could not meet his counterparts over there, but we are we very keen to forge a solid bond with the Qatari Olympic community. Also the Qatar athletic Federation could help us in our quest to upgrade our standards at the Asian Athletic Championship too.” De Silva said
The seventeenth edition of the IAAF World Championships is scheduled to be held between 27 September and 6 October 2019 in Doha, Qatar at the renovated multi-purpose Khalifa International Stadium. De Silva said that there is an official Sri Lanka-Qatar sports programme in effect at present.
