SSC Open Badminton reaches semi-final stages

Chamika Jayasekara and Chirath Illeperuma scored three-set wins to enter the boys under 19 semi-finals at the SSC Open Badminton Championships which is now in progress at the SSC Badminton Stadium and Mercantile Badminton courts.

Jayasekara of Richmond Galle defeated Royal’s Kalana Kannangara 21/15, 18/21, 21/8 in the quarterfinal while bottom seed Illeperuma also of Richmond Galle defeated Bhanuka Abeysinghe of Dharmaraja 15/21, 21/14, 22/20 to enter the semi-finals.

Top seed Chamath Dias defeated Nethula Liyanage 21/12, 21/12 and Lochana de Silva beat Thulith Palliyaguru 16/21, 21/19, 21/12 to join Jayasekera and Illeperuma in the last four. In fact three of the semi-finalists Chamika, Chamath and Chirath are from Richmond College Galle while Lochana is from Dharmasoka Ambalangoda. The semi-finals will be played on January 26 at the SSC courts.

Meanwhile Dumidu Abeywickrama, Induru Anuhas, Netmi Palliyaguru and Mahen Wijesundara entered the boys under 17 quarterfinals and Sharinka Weerasekara, Sethum Sithmaka, Madinu Amaranayake and Thenuka de Silva also did well to enter the boys under 17 quarter finals.

The boys and girls under 13, 15, 17 qualification round matches were played at the Mercantile courts while the other age group matches and open matches will be played at the SSC courts.

Secretary of the SSC Badminton. Gamini Jayasuriya said a record number of entries nearly 1800 was received for this tournament and all matches were scheduled to be played at two venues SSC two courts and five Mercantile courts. The tournament is sponsored by Lin-ning (main sponsor) and McLarens Group (co-sponsor).

Tommy Ellawala, the president of SSC will be the chief guests on the final day on January 27 Saturday.
