‘During my 15-year international cricket career it is the first time that I had the chance to win the Most Popular Sports Personality award at the 4th annual SILK sports awards ceremony which was held at the BMICH recently', said Sri Lanka's most successful fast bowler Lasith Malinga.
The awards ceremony recognized local sporting heroes who have excelled in their respective sporting fields during the 2018.

1996 World Cricket legends Aravinda de Silva, Hashan Tillekeratne, Romesh Kaluwitharna were among the other guests present on the occasion.
A veteran national coach Yogananda Wijesundara has been recognized with a prestigious SLT SILK Lifetime Achievements Award and he received his award from the SLT Chairman. The SLT SILK Lifetime Achievement Awards, given every year to one sports personality, is an initiative of the SILK Jury to recognize the important role models in supporting arena on the road to their sporting achivements.
Sri Lankan batting hero Kumar Sangakkara - one of the greatest in the game in the modern era - is also recognized as the ‘Duncan White Sports Excellence & Contribution’ award winner.
Meanwhile Sri Lanka’s promising weight lifter, Indika Dissanayake, the Commonwealth Games silver medalist won the ‘Outstanding Sports Personality of the year award, while Trinity captain Hasitha Boyagoda was named as the Outstanding School Sports Personality of the year, following his world record 191 against Kenya at the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand in January.
Sri Lanka national Carrom teams bagged two major awards and a special jury medal at the SILK Awards. The men’s carrom team was named as the Men’s Team of the Year, following their 1st Carrom World Cup win in the city of Chuncheon, South Korea in August while Chamil Cooray was named as the Carrom Player of the year following his personal best performances during this year.
Commonwealth Games 45-48kg weight class Women’s Boxing, Bronze medalist, Anusha Kodithuwakku was named the ‘Boxer of the Year’ where she became the first female boxer to win a Commonwealth medal for Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan fast bowler Suranga Lakmal won the Cricketer of the Year award.
The special award list started with Para Sports Personality of the Year award which was won by Amila Prashan the double gold sprinter who won 100m and 200m with an Asian record at the last Para Asian Games in Jakarta while the Women's Team of the Year award went to Sri Lanka Netball team, who have won the Asia Cup and qualified for the 2019 Netball World Cup at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England. The best coach of the year award was won by National Netball coach Thilaka Jinadasa. The Outstanding Sports Academic Achiever Of The Year award was won by Rear Admiral Shemal Fernando who obtained the PHD for sports recently. Former high jumper Nagalingam Ethiriweerasingham was named the Outstanding Generous Sports Personality
S. R. Pathiravithane from Sunday Times was recognized as the ‘Outstanding Contributor to Sports Journalism’, while the ‘Electronic, Social & Digital Media Programme’ award went to SIRASA Inside Sports.
The Special Jury was headed by Harsha Abeykoon.
