Warm welcome to Carrom world champions at BIA

The men’s Carrom team who crowned as the world Carrom champions and the women’s team placed as Runner-up at the 5th Carrom World Cup concluded recently in South Korea were given a grand welcome at the BIA Katunayake. To mark the occasion, a special ceremony was held at the Sports Ministry auditorium under the leadership of Sriyani Wijewickrama, Minister of Sports and Provincial Councils and Local Government.

The World Cup winning men’s team comprised Chamil Darshana Cooray (Captain) of Seylan Bank, Nishantha Fernando of Sri Lanka Navy, Mohamed Shahid Hilmy of Royal College and Udesh Chandima Perera of Sri Lanka Air Force while the women’s team included Yasika Rahubadda (Captain) of Sri Lanka Air Force, Joseph Roshita of Sri Lanka Navy, Chalani Lakmali Liyanage of Sri Lanka Air Force.

They were accompanied by chef de Mission Parakrama Basnayake (President CFSL), Manager Brindley Wickramasinghe (Vice President) and one of the chief Referees Amitha Wickramasinghe (Tournament Secretary). The Champions were initially welcomed at the VIP lounge at BIA by the Sports Ministry officials, Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka officials and three Forces officials. Later they were brought to the Sports Ministry for felicitation and proceeded to the Carrom headquarters at Kohuwala in a vehicle parade.

The welcome ceremony was attended by the Deputy Minister of Justice Dushmantha Mithrapala, Secretory to Sports Ministry Saman Padmasiri and many CFSL and ministry officials.
