St Peter’s, A Rathnayake CC Walala maintain dominance

Junior steeplechase champion Parami Wasanthi established two new meet records on day two.

St Peter’s College, Negombo and A Rathnayake CC Walala continued their dominance in the boys and girls points table at the 88th John Tarbat Senior Athletic Championships being worked off at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

By the end of the second day St Peter’s had 106 points with Royal College (61) and Maris Stella College Negombo (60) in second and third places respectively.

In the girls points table Rathnayake CC Walala led with 124 points followed by Gateway College Nugegoda (51) and Sumana Balika MV from Ratnapura in second and third places respectively.

Altogether 15 new meet records have been established so far with boys registering eight and girls seven.

Junior steeplechase champion of world standing Parami Wasanthi established two new meet records in the U18 2000m clocking 6:37.9 minutes and in the 3000m clocking 9:58.3 minutes.

New meet records were also set by Peterite Hirusha Hashen in the long jump, PMPL Kodikara of Maliyadeva College Kurunegala in the U20 boys 400 meters hurdle with a time of 52.69 secs and Nawodya Sankalp of Mahinda College who registered a personal best of 53.50 seconds in the same event.

Royal College also produced good performances when they won the U18 High Jump with a new meet record with ST Amarasinghe clearing a height of 2.10 meters. They also established a new meet recorld in the U18 relay by clocking 41.88 seconds. St Peter’s College (42.14), St Benedict’s College (42.53) and Joseph Vaz (42.93) took second, third and fourth places respectively.

In the U20 100m relay St Benedict College set up a new meet record clocking 41.73 seconds. Maris Stella Negombo took second place.

The U16 discus throw event was won by Peteriate Rumesh Tharanga who threw a distance of 61.67 meters. Suseenthirakumar Mithunraj was placed second with a personnel best record of 53.79 meters.

In the U18 200m Ramesh Malshan from Maris Stella College Negambo won first place with a time of 21.92secs setting up a new meet record while in the U16 800m Lahiru Avishka from Senanayake NC Madampe also set up a new meet record.

U16 Javelin Throw: HAVLK Hapuarachchi (Sumana Balika Vidyalaya) 37.91m

Shot Put: Ovini Chandrasekara (Bishop's College Colombo) 13.15m

U18 - 4x100m: Gamini N.C. Bentota 49.74secs

U 20 – 5000: Shashikala Deshani (Makandura Central College Makadura) 27:58.35 min

800m: KGDMS Kumarasinghe (Walala A Rathnayaka C.C. 2:12.67 min
