Unseeded Japan’s Yuna Kadowaki created an early upset when she toppled second seed India’s Malikaa Marathe in easy straight sets 6/4, 6/3 and advanced to the girls’ singles second round in the ITF Junior Circuit Week III commenced at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) clay courts yesterday.
Savini Jayasuriya playing her girls’ singles first round match bagged the day’s only victory for host country beating her Indian opponent Harivarshine Murugesan in easy straight sets 6/3, 6/3. Savini dominated the match right from the beginning and never let her Indian rival to pose a threat.
Rest of the Sri Lankan players in the contest failed to live up to the expectations on the opening day and lost their respective matches.
Nathasha Munaweera was defeated by her Indian counterpart Raina Zaffar 1/6, 3/6. The other Lankan in action yesterday, Oneli Perera too went down to her Indian opponent Malvika Shukla 0/6, 3/6.
Top seed Yu Chin TSai of Chinese Taipei had no trouble in beating India’s Sumana Panuganti in comfortable straight sets 6/0, 6/1.
An exciting battle was on the cards in the boys’ singles main draw match between India’s Aashutosh Kulakarni and Malaysia’s Hayden Khoo Menon. Kulakarni won the first set with ease 6/4 but faced a shocking defeat in the following set as Menon played a superb game to steal the win 1/6. The third set saw a fierce fight between the two players where they tried to overcome each other in a ding-dong battle. But Kulakarni sealed her victory in a nail biting finish 7(3)/6.
Ishan Sethi (India) won a hard fought first round battle against Kai Shiang Yang of Chinese Taipei 7/6(5), 6/4.
The tournament will continue until September 22 at the SLTA courts.
