His claim of authority for criticizing the current minister was him having held the sports portfolio in the past. Less said about the nonsense that went on during Dissanayake’s tenure of office, the better to save the recollection of painful memories of our champion athletes who had to endure his vile conduct.
By the way this same duo in combination with G.L Peiris engineered the downfall of the Chandrika Kumaratunga government in 2001 precipitating early elections. In spite of these facts one cannot but, admire their gall for coming before the media and stating what they did as if the entire population of this country is suffering from amnesia. So, what is Sumathipala’s game plan and the mighty hurry to get back on the SLC saddle? When you come to think of it, it is very simple really. Sumathipala has the next hearing on the case filed by Nishantha Ranatunga coming up on 5 October 2018 and he has been avoiding filing objection to the case filed over several hearings.
His difficulty in filing objection is the existence of court records where he has admitted to his family having connections to the gaming industry in an earlier court case. He is now in a quandary where he cannot file objections denying his family involvement in the gaming industry which will find him guilty of perjury. Under such daunting circumstances, Sumathipala’s only hope of getting back on the saddle is to force the Minister of Sports to conduct elections where he can pre-empt on-going court proceedings.
Sumathipala must realize that he is not fooling anyone with these antics of his, as the cricket loving public of this country is well aware that the current chairman of selectors, head coach, batting coach and, all of them are his appointees. So, he should take the entire blame for the destruction that the game of cricket is faced with today which has deprived an entire population of the simple pleasures they enjoyed for decades.
Sumathipala may succeed in hoodwinking the first citizen to appoint a match fixer as a media coordinator, but he must understand that he can never fool the ordinary citizens of this country.
Sumathipala should be reminded of that famous Abraham Lincoln quote popularised by former US President John F Kennedy: “You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.”
