Sanidula, Oshini qualify for World chess event

Sanidula Dahamdi of Musaeus College and Oshini Gunawardena of Ferguson Girls’ School, Ratnapura performed well at the Asian Qualifier of the FIDE Online Queens Chess Festival, which concluded yesterday.

Both Sanidula and Oshini were placed second in their respective categories. Sanidula reached the second place with 8.5 points out of 11 games in the ‘C’ category (Ratings from 1,500-1,799).

This preliminary event was held as a continental level meet of Asia, Africa, America and Europe with the top three players of each continental event having a chance to enter the world event.

Meanwhile, nine-year-old Oshini competing in the category ‘D’ (Ratings below 1,500) obtained nine points with two other players and had to be satisfied with the second place according to the tie-breaker.

With these performances Sanidula and Oshini have qualified to play in the world event, which is scheduled to be held on June 26.

A total of 11 Girls from Sri Lanka participated in this event.
