Sri Lanka’s national champion Ranindu Liyanage and Susal de Silva recorded victories in the third-round of the Asian Zonal Hybrid Chess Championship, which continued yesterday.
Liyanage beat Ahmad Mahatabuddin of Bangladesh while Susal beat Swarnavo Choudhry also from Bangladesh.
Both players have obtained 2.5 points each out of a possible three and have maintained an unbeaten record in the tournament.
Ranindu and Susal are in the second bunch of six players who are just behind the two leaders having three points each.
The two leaders are Grandmasters from Bangladesh Ziaur Rahman and Enamul Hussain with both having an unbeaten record.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s third competitor Buddhika Amarasinghe was unable to win his third-round game and was defeated by Subrota Buswas of Bangladesh.
Susal will meet the Bangladesh International Master Abu Shafian Shakil while Ranindu will meet Anata Choughry also from Bangladesh in the fourth-round.
A total of 39 players from Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Maldives and Sri Lanka are participating in this event, conducted by the Bangladesh Chess Federation.
The Sri Lankan players are competing from the Headquarters of the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka in Gangodawila, Nugegoda. (D.R)
