Nipuna Manatunge the athletic and tennis star

Nipuna Nuwan Manatunge, Grade Eleven Student of Mawathagama National School is an outstanding tennis player and a talented Athlete.

He was involved in gymnastics also and secured the Second place in the Under 8 Sri Lanka Schools Gymnastic Championship and secured the Fourth place at the South Indian Gymnastics Championship in the same age group in the year 2011. As he grew up he lost interest in Gymnastics and started playing Tennis while participating in Athletics. His Coach in both Tennis and Athletics was his father, Jayalath Manatunge, former sportsman of Sri Lanka Army.

In the year 2012 Nipuna became first in 75 Metres. Race and third in the 50 Metres.race at the Weerodara Sports Meet held for the Army families and in the year 2014 he participated at the Kandy Mahaweli Reach Junior Tennis Championship for the first time and became the Under 11 Singles champion. In the same year he participated at the Kandy Garden Club Tennis Tournament and won the under 11 singles title and won the Runners-Up title at the same tournament in the Under 11 age group. In 2015 again he won the Kandy Garden Club Tennis title and he participated at the Tennis tournament conducted by St. Anthonys’ College Tennis

Club,Katugastota in the Under 12 age group and emerged Runner-up at the Under 14 tournament and he was ranked No.1 in the Kandy District. In 2017

Nipuna continued his winning spree when he won both under 13 and Under 15 Tennis titles at the Tennis Tournament held at Mahaweli Reach, Kandy Tennis courts. Again in 2019 he participated at the Kandy Mahaweli Reach Tennis Tournament and secured the Under 17 singles Tennis title and with these victories Nipuna has won Five Tennis titles in different age groups.

As an Athlete he was the champion in School from under 9 to 13 age groups in Long Jump, High Jump and 75 Metres Race. At the same time he has won both Long Jump,High Jump and 100 MetresRace at the School Sports Meet.

Due to Covid pandemic they did not have Tennis tournaments and at present his intention is to practice more in Tennis and to participate at International Level Meets in the future. He is thankful to his father,Jayalath Manatunge for the strenuous training Given to him as his tennis coach , who is a WO II in the Sri Lanka Army who has taken part in Para Olympics held in Athens,Greece in 2004.
