Liyanage upsets Parag at Asian Chess Tourney

Ranindu Liyanage-Susal de Silva- Buddhika Amarasinghe

National champion Ranindu Liyanage came out with a fine performance to win his game against Mehdi Hasan Parag of Bangladesh in the penultimate round of the Asian Zonal Hybrid Chess Championship, which continued yesterday.

With this victory, Liyanage has obtained 5.5 points out of eight games with the final round to be completed of this tournament, which is conducted by the Bangladesh Chess Federation.

Ranindu will meet the Grandmaster Enamul Hussain from Bangladesh in the final-round today.

Meanwhile young FIDE Master Susal de Silva had to be satisfied with a draw against Zia Tahsin Tajwar of Bangladesh and shared 0.5 points each.

Susal has obtained five points and is level with Buddhika Amarasinghe, who received a walk-over from Nepal’s Kushatha Niken.

Susal will meet Amarasinghe in the last round of the tournament.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman (2,434) is in top form and is leading with 7.5 points out of eight games.

Enamu Hussain is in second place with seven points while Liyanage and Manon Reja (Bangladesh) are in third place with 5.5 points each.

The Asian Zonal Chess Championship 2021 is the preliminary event for the FIDE World Chess Cup.

A total of 39 players from Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Maldives and Sri Lanka are participating in this event.
