Liyanage, Uddin share points in fifth-round

National champion Ranindu Liyanage had to be satisfied with a draw in the fifth-round of the Asian Zonal Hybrid Chess Championship, which continued yesterday.

Liyanage was up against a higher-rated International Master from Bangladesh Mohammad Minhaz Uddin and after a tough battle they finally settled for a draw and shared 0.5 points each.

Liyanage has obtained a total four points out of five games while the Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman of Bangladesh scored a point in the fifth-round and stayed in the lead with 4.5 points after the fifth-round.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s Susal de Silva lost his fourth-round game to International Master Shakil of Bangladesh after a long battle.

Sri Lanka’s Buddhika Amarasinghe also had a good day as he beat Ahmed Mahatabbudin of Bangladesh to collect three points.

Amarasinghe will meet the Bangladesh FIDE Master Ahmed Shike Nazir in the sixth-round.

The Bangladesh Chess Federation is conducting this event, which comprises nine rounds. The Sri Lankan players are competing from the Headquarters of the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka in Gangodawila, Nugegoda.

A total of 39 players from Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Maldives and Sri Lanka are participating in this event.
