Sri Lanka will face an uphill task when they meet South Korea in their final match of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Preliminary Round-2 Competition along with the AFC Asian Cup China 2023 Qualifiers Group ‘H’ at the Goyang Stadium in Goyang City in South Korea today. The kick-off is at 4 p.m. (SL time)
After going down to Lebanon 2-3 a few days ago, Sri Lankan will have another acid test, against another top contender who are slated 39 in the FIFA Rankings.
“We as a team are proud of what we were able to do in the first game. Due to some minor mistakes we conceded goals which could have still been prevented. I am happy with the way the boys performed for the country. We are fully focused to give our best for the country in this game even though they are favorites under home advantage conditions,” Sri Lanka Skipper Sujan Perera said yesterday.
“Everyone knows how we prepared for this tournament. It is a collective effort by the team. Only few players have reached the international standard compared to other countries in the fray,” Sri Lanka Coach Amir Alagic said yesterday. “With the pandemic situation it was a herculean task for us to gear up for a tournament of this nature. Anyway, I am happy with the team’s performance in the first game.”
“One should not forget that almost 70 percent of the Lebanon players are engaged in European Leagues with better match practice. But we still managed to reduce the goal deficit.”
“Today’s opponent has a different composition. They too are composed of players who play in top Leagues in the world. They are speed and fully geared up for this match.”
“Our target is to curtail them scoring at will and to utilise the chances to make the scoring for us while imposing the all-important pressure. We will do our best to put out an improved performance,” concluded Alagic.
