Himasha and Samith hog the limelight at Army Athletic Meet

National 100m champion Himasha Eashan and shot-putter Samith Fernando set up new meet records at the Army Athletic Championship Stage-1 held at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo on Tuesday.

However, some of the athletes who are in contention for the Tokyo Olympic Games struggled to improve on their seasonal best performances.

South Asian medallists Eashan clocked 10.34s to set up a new meet record while Chamod Yodasinghe (10.37s) and A. J. Wijeratne (10.81s) finished second and third respectively.

Meanwhile, South Asian Bronze Medallist Fernando set up a new shot put record with a personal best of 16.89m. His previous personal best was 16.62m while R. S. Jayawardena (14.79m) and B. D. Delwita (13.80m) placed second and third in this event.

Asian Youth Championship medallist Harsha Karunaratne also made a superb comeback after more than two years to finish first in the Men’s 800m event with one minute 51.06s.

S. K. Fernando and Rushiru Chaturanga were placed second and third respectively. Kalinga Kumarage won the 400m heat with a time of 46.59s while Aruna Dharshana won the final with a time of 47.05s.

The second place was won by R. M. Rajakaruna with a time of 47.50s and Ajith Premakumara won the third place with 47.93s.

The 3,000m steeplechase event was won by Nilani Ratnayake with a disappointing time of 10 minutes 05.02s. In fact, this was Ratnayaka’s last domestic event before the Olympic qualification date which is June 29.

The 100m Women’s event was won by Amasha de Silva with a time of 11.93s while Medhani Jayamanne (12.15s) and Safiya Yamic (12.19s) were placed second and third respectively.

Prasad Wimalasiri won the long jump event with 7.94m while T. D. Herath (7.77m) and Mahesh Karunasekara (7.76m) were placed second and third respectively.

Nadeesha Ramanayake, who is ranked 56th in the Road to Olympics Rankings, returned a time of 54.48s to win the 400m Women’s final.

Olympian Sumedha Ranasinghe who is heading for his second Olympics this time was not up to the standard at this meet while winning the Men’s javelin throw with a performance of 73.57m.

Dilhani Lekamge won the Women’s javelin throw with an effort of 56.94m while the experienced Nadeeka Lakmali was placed second with 53.74m. Lakshika Sugandi won the Women’s 100m hurdles with 14.4s while S. N. Fernando finished second with 15.74s.
