Chathuri Sivanthika the athlete turned spiker

Seventeen year old volleyball player and champion athlete Meragal Pedige Chathuri Sivanthika has brought honour and immense fame to her Alma Mater Tissapura Vidyalaya Uhana, Ampara and Super Kings Sports Club Uhana. She was born on 23rd January 2004 and was admitted to Tissapura Vidyalaya in 2009 when M. Muthugala was at the helm of the school and her first class teacher was Mrs. Biso Menike.

Since her smaller days she showed a keenness for sports and when she was in Grade four she participated tin her school Annual Athletic Meet and won the 100 metre event and came second in High Jump and at the next sports meet she came first in 100 metres and came second in Long Jump and High Jump respectively and in the Annual Athletic Meet she won the high jump, putt shot and came second in Long Jump and in 2012 she won the High Jump, Long Jump and 100 metre events with ease and swept the board and became the under eleven Champion Athlete but after that she did not continue Athletics. Her teacher in Charge for sports was Mrs. Waruni Udatiyawala.

In the mean time her parents Saman Upul Kumara and Gayani Mangalika encouraged her to take up to Volleyball and she came under her school coach Mr. Indika. She took part at the Inter House Volleyball Tournaments of the school and she performed well. Then in 2016 they won the Divisional and District Volleyball Tournaments in the under 14 age group and in the DSI All Island Tournament they clinched the Trophy. Same year at the Inter House Under 15 Volleyball Tournament her house became Runners Up and later in the under 17 tournament too her house were runners up.

In 2017 they won the Lower Division Tournaments and in the All Island Schools Tournaments they were the under 16 Runners Up and in 2018 going through the same process in the DSI All Island under 16 Tournament they emerged champions and Chathuri carried away the Best Players Award.

Same year in the All Island Youth Open Tournament representing her club they were the second runner up. In 2019 she was appointed as the under 17 Captain and in the All Island Tournament they were the DSI Runners Up and in the All Island Schools Tournament they were the Champions and in the Youth All Island Tournament they came second

In the Open 2020 Rupavahini Tournament they got the third place and in 2019 in the Munchee Trophy Open Tournament they gained the second place. Her former Principal Udaya Kumara supported her in many ways along with the Teacher in Charge of Volleyball Mrs. Subani and her present Principal Indika Pushpakumara too is supportive of her to come up the ladder. She passed the Ordinary Level Examination with flying colours and she was admitted to D. S. Senanayake National School Ampara for her higher studies and it was Tissapura Vidyalaya’s loss and D. S. Senanayake National School’s gain.
