Army’s veteran sports stalwart Mahesh Abeyratne was promoted to the rank of Major General recently.
Abeyratne is a prominent sports personality in the Army and has won many accolades as a volleyball player, coach and a sports administrator.
Currently, he is the Vice-President of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation and Chairman of the Army Volleyball Federation. Abeyratne was a champion schools athlete and won the Silver Medal in the hammer throw event at the 20th Asian Veterans’ Athletics Championship.
He has also represented the National Volleyball Team and spearheaded the Army Volleyball Team to victory at the 1994 Nationals. He is an international volleyball coach who is accredited with Level-1, 2 and 3 and is also a qualified beach volleyball coach. Abeyratne was also a former Secretary SLVF, Chairman - Volleyball Selection Committee, Ex-Co member - National Volleyball Selection Committee and NOC Executive Member (2000-2004).
Abeyratne was presented with the ‘Rana Soora’ medal for his services to the Sri Lanka Army. (A.A)
